The Car Seat on Your Hospital Bag Checklist: Sort It Out First
Why the car seat belongs on your checklist weeks before the due date, and where to get installation help.
The American Academy of Pediatrics' HealthyChildren.org says hospital staff will ask whether you have a rear-facing car safety seat installed in the back seat before you go home (HealthyChildren.org).
What NHTSA advises
From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA car seats, installing an infant seat):
- Not all car seats fit all vehicles; check the fit before you buy.
- Install with either the lower anchors or the seat belt, never both.
- Babies ride semi-reclined; most infant seats have an angle indicator.
- The harness is snug when you can't pinch extra material at the shoulder.
Get help
NHTSA lists car seat inspection stations, many free of charge, and some offer virtual inspections (NHTSA). HealthyChildren.org suggests working with a certified child passenger safety technician before the baby is born.
Always follow your car seat's and your vehicle's manuals.
