Hospital Bag Checklist Timing: When to Pack (and What to Leave for Last)

A simple timeline for packing your hospital bag, with tips for the items you can't pack early.

There is no single right date, but most guidance points to the last month of pregnancy. MedlinePlus suggests having your items ready about a month before your due date (MedlinePlus). Several US OB/GYN practices suggest around 35–36 weeks (Women's Care, Gwinnett OB/GYN). Your care team can tell you whether a different timing makes sense for you.

Pack early: things you won't use before the birth

  • Going-home outfit for you and for the baby
  • Toiletries in travel sizes
  • Non-slip socks or slippers, robe
  • Nursing bras and breast pads, if you plan to nurse

Pack last: things you use every day

Some items can't go in the bag weeks ahead because you still need them at home:

  • Phone and a long charging cable
  • Glasses or contacts
  • Prescription medications (ask your care team what to bring)
  • Wallet, ID and insurance card

In our checklist, mark these as Pack last. When it's time to go, open Leaving now to see only what is still left to grab.

Before you need the bag

  • Install the car seat. MedlinePlus notes a car seat is required by law and should be installed before you go to the hospital (MedlinePlus).
  • Ask your hospital what it supplies. Many provide gowns and some supplies, but policies differ.

This article is a planning aid, not medical advice. If you are unsure whether it is time to go to the hospital, contact your care team.
