What the Hospital Provides: Hospital Bag Checklist Questions to Ask
Hospitals differ on diapers, pads, gowns and toiletries. Here is what to ask so you don't overpack or come up short.
It depends on the hospital, so the safest answer is: ask yours. Here is what published hospital and health sources say, and the questions worth asking.
What sources say hospitals often supply
- MedlinePlus says the hospital will supply you with a gown, slippers, disposable underwear and basic toiletries (MedlinePlus).
- Mayo Clinic Health System notes that its hospitals do not provide clothing or blankets for children going home (Mayo Clinic Health System).
These are examples from specific sources, not a rule for every hospital.
Questions to ask your hospital
- Do you provide diapers and wipes for the baby during the stay?
- Do you provide pads and disposable underwear after birth?
- Do you have breast pumps available if I need one?
- Can I bring my own pillow, speaker or snacks? Are there food rules during labor?
- Is there parking or a drop-off area at the entrance?
- What do you need from me at check-in (pre-registration, ID, insurance card)?
How to record the answers
In the checklist, every hospital supply starts as not confirmed. When your hospital confirms an item, record it there; only confirmed quantities reduce what you bring.
