Baby Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for Your Newborn

A short, source-backed list of what to bring for your newborn's stay and trip home.

Babies need less than you might think for the hospital stay itself. Sources consistently list a small set of items, mostly for the trip home.

From MedlinePlus (MedlinePlus) and Mayo Clinic Health System (Mayo Clinic Health System):

  • A going-home outfit (one sleeper or outfit)
  • A receiving blanket, and warmer layers or a bunting if it's cold
  • A hat and socks, especially in colder weather
  • An installed car seat

Ask before packing more

Whether you need diapers and wipes during the stay depends on your hospital. Ask, and record the answer in the checklist so you only pack what's needed.

Keep it simple

Pack baby items in their own pouch or bag so a partner can find them quickly.
